Imported, Italian Maremma Sheepdog Pedigrees. The Italian Maremma Sheepdog is an entirely distinct breed from the Turkish Great Pyrenees— even though they look very similar. Body shape, head structure and coat type are nearly the same in both breeds. One of the few differences visually is the Maremma might on occasion be a few lbs light, but not much. A good argument can be made that the main difference between the Italian Maremma Sheepdog and the Turkish Great Pyrenees has little to do with how they look, but rather how they protect their flocks. How they get the job done is why Maremma are arguably one of the greatest of all livestock guardian dogs. Where many livestock guardian dog breeds are what are called perimeter livestock guardian dogs, Maremma are typically not this way.

Livestock Guardian Dogs That Bond To The Flock They Guard. Perimeter livestock guardian dogs are breeds that were often developed in mountain regions where dogs would sit up higher than the animals, looking down on the animals they protected. They will often protect a geographically area. Particularly with smaller farms or homesteads, this can prove problematic as these dogs are notorious for roaming. Instinctually, they are simply protecting the area they have claimed as their own. How these LGDs protect and guard is not surprising when we look at the development of these breeds. Both Anatolian Shepherds and tend to patrol the perimeter of land they guard. While they will usually make it back to the animals they are guarding when a problem arises, and kill the predator. These are formidable dogs, often capable to large predators including wolves on occasion. But too often, even though the predator is killed, this may not occur before before the predator has killed one of the flock. LGD that guard a geographical area as much as the actual flock are one drawback of many LGD breeds. Its one of the main reasons why even though our parents and family raised Great Pyrenees for many years, we ourselves now only have the Maremma Sheepdog as livestock guardian dogs. Our Maremma stick close to our animals. More often than not they are livestock guardian dogs that bond with the animals. In most cases, it makes it next to impossible to even sneak up on them.  This can make it next to impossible to sneak up on the animals they protect. Because they tend to stay closer to their animals, they are generally able to prevent the prevent predator from killing flock animals. As many Maremma owners will say after switching from other LGD breeds, the Maremma have been a lifesaver! Loss is way down. They sleep easier at night. Exclusively Working Line Maremma Sheepdog for Sale— No Show Lines! When we talk about working line dogs, we are distinguishing these lines from their show counterparts in several ways. One of the most easily recognized difference is the working line dogs come from farms and ranches where they live with the animals they guard. If they can’t do the job they are culled. Period. It’s kind of like building a herd of cattle. If a cow doesn’t reproduce, what is done? She is culled! The best bloodlines cull the most aggressively. Over time the problem traits are eliminated— and fast.  Since the working line Maremmas have been proven across generations to thrive out in pastures , it makes sense that their form logically follows function. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand how show line dogs that are generationally removed from actual serving as livestock guardian dogs might not be the best plan of action. If you want a livestock guard dog to watch your animals, find people offering livestock guardian dogs for sale that come from generations of true working line livestock guardian dogs.
