All our livestock guardian dogs are purebred and registered with the Maremma Sheepdog Club of America. But we don’t stop there! As working line breeders of livestock guardian dogs, we only use 100% working lines! We don’t ever mix in show lines. Doing so would arguably set our lines back generations. Testing against an objective standard means our working line Maremma Sheepdogs have demonstrated a proven capacity for livestock protection. Our predation losses have dropped to nearly zero. "We bought a Francesca daughter. What a gem. It was obvious she had been raised with exposure to animals out in pasture from a young age. She has taken to our Kahtahdin like a fish to water. She watches over our lambs like they are her own children. Our kids will try and sneak up on our girl. Not once have they ever been able to accomplish this feat. That she comes from a generational working line pedigree is so obvious. We could not be more pleased with her. Even in the snow and ice, she prefers her flock over coming in to warm up. Best decision we could have made was getting one of Francesca's pups! We have had other breeds of livestock guardian dogs. But we had a problem keeping our dogs at home. They seemed to think our neighbor's farm was theirs as well. Getting a Maremma from Livestock Guardian Dogs stopped this problem. Our Maremma STAYS with our sheep. We are so, so happy!
After going through two two different breeds of Livestock Guardian Dogs, both Anatolian Shepherds as well as Great Pyrenees, we knew we had to do something different. As we have now come to understand, both of these breeds were bred in an environment where they would sit high up on the hills and watch over their animals. They are what some will describe as perimeter breeds. Patrolling the perimeter, these livestock guardian dogs will usually get the predator. But because our Anatolian and Pyrenees would roam, the predator would often kill one of our animals by the time our LGD was able to get back and take care of the predator. So even though the coyote or other predator was killed or chased off, we'd end up losing too many animals. Getting a Maremma stopped this loss in its tracks! We bought a Giorgia male puppy. If you can't get get something from Giorgia, we highly, highly recomnd it!
Livestock Guardian Dogs is a family-oriented breeding program. We raise working line Maremma Sheepdogs—producing just a few litters a year. Each Maremma Sheepdog puppy for sale is the result of careful planning. With many of the Maremma here in the USA coming from just three or four large breeders, we chose to import our foundation girls. Close family friends from Canada had imported working line Maremma from Italy and had proven these lines over several decades. You could not sneak up on these dogs if you tried! Defending against bear, mountain lion and scores of coyote, these dogs kept sheep and goats alive in remote locations. This was exactly the kind of dog we wanted. We knew it only made sense to add to the gene pool here in the USA. Our dogs live with the flock they protect. They have been selected from Maremma lines that were specifically chosen to stay put and bond with the animals they protect— as opposed breeds more inclined to pace the perimeter than stay close to the animals they protect. Maremma were a game changer. And this is coming from a family with generational ties to Great Pyrenees! While the Italian Maremma Sheepdog appears visually very similar to the Great Pyrenees, this Italian wonder is something else when it comes to bonding and staying with the animals. While there are no guarantees when it comes to dogs, the difference between other breeds of livestock guardian dogs and Maremma has been enough to move exclusively to the Italian Maremma Sheepdog as the only livestock guardian dog on our property. We don’t have any mixed breed livestock guardian dogs, no Pyrenees, no Anatolian Shepherds, no Kangal Shepherd dogs, no Kuvas, no Akbash, no Bernese Mountain Dog— just the Maremma Sheepdog. We try to keep them in pairs. They seem happier and more content this way. If you have any questions about Maremma Sheepdog and why they might be just the solution for a livestock guardian dog, give us a call. We’d love to share our experience with these great dogs!
